After a successful early career with large multi-national Corporates such as British Steel, British Gas / Centrica and Churchill Insurance, Martin established his own consultancy firm in 2003. His initial focus was on companies who needed an experienced, all-round financial and accounting professional to manage the Finance function through turbulent times, but this quickly developed into helping turn around companies in financial distress or companies in start-up phase.
In the intervening 15+ years, Martin has supported more than a dozen companies across a variety of sectors and sizes, including household names such as Hitachi, Fiat and SAB Miller brewers as well as smaller private companies. As Martin says “it’s the application of your financial, accounting and managerial skills and experience that’s important, more so than your sector experience”. After saying that, 3 of Martin’s last 4 assignments have been in the parcel and logistics sector, initially as interim Finance Director with each of Pitney Bowes and Asendia before Martin joined APG as Group CFO in July 2018.
Martin is a qualified accountant (CIMA), with a BSc degree in Computer Science & Accountancy and an MBA. He lives in the country between Durham and Newcastle in the NE of England, commuting to London on a weekly basis, is married and has 2 grown-up boys – one training to be an airline pilot and the other in the hospitality industry. Martin enjoys cycling, supports Newcastle United FC (as he says, “I must have done something wrong in a previous life!”), loves travelling and, when at home, enjoys cooking for family and friends “with a glass of red in hand”.
